Luco, Mabel & McKeage/Fath, Jean (L to R)
Bomb Girls
During the summer of 1944 Jean and a fellow teacher, Mabel Luco from Coalhurst, decided to help the war effort. They travelled to Ajax, Ontario where they joined other young women at an ammunition factory. They worked at the factory for three months that summer, doing their part to help those fighting overseas in World War II. Pictures taken are from the barracks where Jean McKeage and Mabel Luco stayed while working at the Factory in Ajax, ON. Note the “Bomb Girl” clothing with buttons (no metal was allowed) and head kerchief bandana that all the women wore when working on the factory floor.

Survived Hero
Ivan joined the army January 1942 spending two months in basic training at Camrose, AB, eventually working at the recently opened training base west of Vulcan (known today as the ‘old airport’). Ivan’s first job there was digging ditches but two days into his new career his sergeant made him a carpenter on the base.
In the fall of 1942, he was sent over to England. He returned to teach enlisted men here. Over the next three years Ivan was posted between Canada and Europe. He spent time in Moose Jaw SK, Megantic QC, Terrace BC, Port Hardy BC and also Prince Rupert BC where his assignment was to test cold weather clothing for active duty.
Ivan was a sergeant and was a member of the “King’s Own Rifles of Canada”. In 1945, Ivan was billeted with the occupational forces outside of Nunspeet, Holland and broke his ankle playing baseball. He was shipped home.
In Nov. 2012 Ivan received his pin for being a member of the Vulcan Legion for 65 years. He passed away on October 18, 2015.
