Roy joined the Army in WW2, Drove tanks with the Kings Own Calgary Regiment, 14th Arm’d Regt. Taking part in a major Campaign in Italy.
Roy returned to sothern Alberta after the War, Starting a career in Autobody and starting his Family.
Roy was a Life Memember of B.P.O Elks, The Vulcan Curling Club and an Active Member of The Vulcan Legion.

Raised in the Lomond Alberta area and Joined the RCAF in 1963.
Went to St Jean PQ for Basic Electronics and Radar. Switched to Aero Electronics and moved to Winnipeg. Moved into Air Crew and transfered to Esquimalt BC for Officer Training then was posted to Flight School at Gimli Manitoba.
Took Electronics again in Kingston Ontario, then moved to Cold Lake Alberta where he spent the rest of his career in Telecom and Control Tower Communications as well as Aero Space Test Engineering. Retired in 1983.
Spent his civilian career teaching Electronics in Coaldale Alberta and at Novatel In Calgary Alberta. Joined the GPS research team and was a hardware designer until retirement in 2007.
Currently resides in Airdrie Alberta.
Gooch, Sgt George J.
Survived Hero
Sgt. George J. Gooch enlisted in the Canadian Army in Dec. 1942. He took his basic training in Calgary . In June 1943 he was shipped over seas to Aldershot England then to the 5th Division of the New Westminster Regiment in Italy as part of the Italian Campain including the Battles of the Liri Vally, Mont Cassino and Rimini. After he was posted to the 1st Division of the Royal Canadian Regiment where he went to Leghorn Italy, Marselles France then to Belgium, Germany and the liberation of Holland.
He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Medal, 1939-1945 star, France and Germany Star, Italian Campaign Star and the Defence of Britain Medal.
He returned to Calgary and was discharged in the fall of 1945

Raised in Lomond, Alberta.
Joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1962 and retired in 1982. He was in Communications and Research.
He was stationed in Cornwallis, N.S., Ottawa, Bermuda ,Churchill, Inuvik, back to Ottawa and finished his career in Gander, Nfld.

Wyman was born and died at Carmangay 1920-1978
He served in the RCAF from 1939 – 1945. As a Pilot Officer he flew Halifax Bombers and completed all his missions.
Wyman was a member of the Vulcan and Barons Legions.

Michael Shopka joined the army in 1965-1991 Royal infantry Ottawa and was sworn in at Winnipeg and stationed in Edmonton. Soon after and until 1969 he was shipped to Germany and then based In Fort Macleod. He then returned to Calgary for a few years. Then back to Germany for another 4 years, back to Calgary for 4 more years to Kingston for 3 years Calgary for another 4 years Michael was unlisted for 24 years.

Calvert, Mike served with the Canadian Army from 1966-1969 in the Royal Canadian Regiment 2nd Battalion. Mike served all over Canada, Europe and elsewhere.
Casey, Douglas
Survived Hero
Douglas Casey was born June 25, 1947 in Moncton New Brunswick. Died July 13, 2021. Douglas served 3 years with the Royal Canadian Navy on the HMCS Columbia, based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Douglas married his wife Eunice on July 31, 1966. They had two children together, Tina and Chad. Douglas spoke about his time on the Columbia and some of the countries he had seen while serving with the Navy. Douglas also did a NATO trip for six months. Douglas spoke of how much he enjoyed his time with the Navy and was very proud to serve his country.

Harvey Wenzel served with the King’s Own Calgary Regiment Canada as a Gunner on Sherman Tanks from 1951-1956. Harvey was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion for over 60 years.
Almond, Neil M.

Almond, Neil M. Surviving Hero…… son of Dr. W.W. Almond and raised in Vulcan. Joined the RCAF in 1939 and trained to be a pilot. After training he was posted to the Birmingham, England area as a Flight Sergeant and spent the war training combat pilots.
Neil returned and lived in Calgary after the war and passed away in 2004.
Almond R. Verne

Verne R Almond was born in Vulcan, son of Dr. WW Almond.
He joined the RCAF in 1939 as a Pilot Officer. After training, he was stationed in the Birmingham area and served as both an instructor as well as operational pilot in Mosquito fighter/bombers. He survived the war and was discharged in 1945 at the rank of Flight Lieutenant.
He passed away on August 1, 1976

Took training as Wireless Air Gunner in RC Air Force.
Became instructor and finished as such (1942 to 1945)
Remained in Canada till 1964.
Died at Shelly Bay January 31, 1997.
Haga, Ivan

Ivan joined the army January 1942 spending two months in basic training at Camrose, AB, eventually working at the recently opened training base west of Vulcan (known today as the ‘old airport’). Ivan’s first job there was digging ditches but two days into his new career his sergeant made him a carpenter on the base.
In the fall of 1942, he was sent over to England. He returned to teach enlisted men here. Over the next three years Ivan was posted between Canada and Europe. He spent time in Moose Jaw SK, Megantic QC, Terrace BC, Port Hardy BC and also Prince Rupert BC where his assignment was to test cold weather clothing for active duty.
Ivan was a sergeant and was a member of the “King’s Own Rifles of Canada”. In 1945, Ivan was billeted with the occupational forces outside of Nunspeet, Holland and broke his ankle playing baseball. He was shipped home.
In Nov. 2012 Ivan received his pin for being a member of the Vulcan Legion for 65 years. He passed away on October 18, 2015.

Bomb Girls
During the summer of 1944 Jean and a fellow teacher, Mabel Luco from Coalhurst, decided to help the war effort. They travelled to Ajax, Ontario where they joined other young women at an ammunition factory. They worked at the factory for three months that summer, doing their part to help those fighting overseas in World War II. Pictures taken are from the barracks where Jean McKeage and Mabel Luco stayed while working at the Factory in Ajax, ON. Note the “Bomb Girl” clothing with buttons (no metal was allowed) and head kerchief bandana that all the women wore when working on the factory floor.
Mallory, Donald

Don was born in Kirkcaldy, AB in October of 1921. He spent most of his youth in the Kirkcaldy and Alston areas and he completed high school in Vulcan.
Don volunteered for service and enlisted with the RCAF in Calgary.
He served in aircrew as a W.A.G. on Cansos, Catalinas and Venturas, providing escort and patrol duty in the Canadian Maritimes. Later, he was stationed in England and served as a W.A.G. on Ansons, Wellingtons and Lancasters, providing naval detail.
After WWII, Don operated the general store in Kirkcaldy with his sister, Elva, and his father, Grant. With his wife Mary, he raised 2 sons. Don passed away in January, 2005.

He flew 40 sorties (194 hours and 5 minutes) from March 15 to August 31, 1944.
Received the Distinguished Flying Cross in February 1945.

McNiven, Daniel

First class stoker. (Stokers feed coal to the boilers. Dan was down 4 stories in the bowels of ship).
Dan received an Appreciation Medal from the Russian government which was presented to him October 3rd, 1988 at the Kensington Legion in Calgary by the Russian ambassador. This medal was for participating as an Allied Force fighter for 4 years of victory in World War II (1941 – 1945).
First star: 1939 – 1945 War star.
Second star : service in the Atlantic Ocean.
Third star: service in the Pacific Ocean.
Fourth medal – volunteer to service.
Fifth medal: War medal issued after the war.
Roe, Orville (Pat) Muckle

June 5, 1919 – June 13, 2001
Joined the Navy in 1942 as a stoker and later served as an Electrical Artificer.
While in the service his operations included landing troops on the Normandy Beachhead “D-Day June 4, 1944 and in the Mediterranean to land troops for the initial landing of Southern France.
Active force with the Vulcan Legion Branch, he acquired and erected the Flag Pole, the Ships Anchor and Jade Cairn.
Pat was born and raised in Vulcan.
